Why is it important to select your puppy from a KUSA registered breeder.
Choosing a puppy from a KUSA (Kennel Union of Southern Africa) registered breeder offers several important benefits:
- Breed Authenticity and Quality: KUSA registration is the best possible guarantee that the puppy is a genuine representative of its breed available in South Africa. Registered breeders are expected to follow breed standard requirements, which help maintain the integrity of the breed’s appearance, traits, and characteristics.
- Health Screening: Reputable KUSA registered breeders are expected to prioritise the health and well-being of their puppies. They should conduct necessary health screenings on the parents, which helps reduce the risk of inherited genetic disorders or health problems in the puppies. It is a requirement for registration in the Weimaraner breed that the Dam and Sire have approved hip X-Ray reports before the puppies may be registered.
- Ethical Breeding Practices: KUSA registered breeders are expected to adhere to ethical breeding practices. They focus on the well-being of both the breeding dogs and the puppies, ensuring responsible mating choices, proper care, and socialisation.
- Temperament and Behavior: Experienced breeders should emphasise the development of desirable temperament traits in their puppies. By selecting a KUSA registered puppy, you increase the likelihood of getting a well-adjusted and temperamentally sound companion.
- Knowledge and Support: KUSA registered breeders should typically be knowledgeable about the breed and should be able to provide valuable information and guidance throughout the puppy’s life. They should be able to offer advice on training, care, and addressing breed-specific needs.
- Avoiding Puppy Mills: Choosing a KUSA registered breeder is likely to reduce the chances of supporting puppy mills or irresponsible breeding operations. Registered breeders should expect to be held to higher standards and are more likely to prioritise the health and welfare of their dogs.
- Access to Community: When you choose a KUSA registered puppy, you should expect to become part of a community of fellow breed enthusiasts. This network should be able to provide support, resources, and opportunities to connect with other dog owners who share your interests.
- Show and Performance Opportunities: If you’re interested in participating in dog shows or performance events or even field trials or Shooting Ratings which is a Weimaraner area of interest, KUSA registration is often a requirement. Purchasing a puppy from a registered breeder should give you the opportunity to explore these activities.

Why conformation is important in hunting dogs.
See the Weimaraner Breed Standard: https://www.kusa.co.za/index.php/documents/breed-standards/12-kusa-breeds/kusa-breed-standards/gundog-group/1081-weimaraner-2
The conformation of hunting dogs is crucial for their performance and success in the field. Conformation refers to the physical structure, appearance, and overall body proportions of a dog. In the case of hunting dogs, a well-balanced and properly structured conformation can significantly impact their abilities and effectiveness during hunting activities. Here are some key reasons why conformation is important in hunting dogs:
• Efficient Movement: A well-structured hunting dog is more likely to have balanced and efficient movement. This is particularly important in the field where dogs need to cover long distances, navigate challenging terrains, and maintain stamina throughout the hunt. Proper conformation helps to reduce the risk of injury and exhaustion during prolonged hunting sessions.
• Endurance: Hunting often involves extended periods of physical activity, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. Dogs with correct conformation are more likely to possess the endurance needed to stay focused and perform well throughout the hunt. They are less prone to fatigue, which allows them to maintain their energy and drive to track and retrieve game effectively.
• Speed and Agility: The conformation of a hunting dog can impact its speed and agility, both of which are critical traits in catching and pursuing game. Properly angulated limbs and a balanced body structure enable dogs to move swiftly and change direction quickly, which is especially advantageous when hunting fast or elusive prey.
• Sense of Smell: Many hunting dogs rely on their keen sense of smell to track and locate game. The shape of the head and muzzle can influence the development of scent receptors, affecting the dog’s olfactory capabilities. A well-constructed head and muzzle can enhance a hunting dog’s ability to detect and follow scent trails accurately.
• Retrieval Skills: For dogs involved in bird hunting or retrieving wounded game, conformation plays a role in their ability to carry items comfortably in their mouths. Properly aligned jaws and a strong neck and back contribute to their capacity to retrieve and transport hunted game without discomfort or injury.
• Adaptability to Terrain: Hunting often takes place in varying terrains, such as dense forests, marshes, or rocky landscapes. A hunting dog with good conformation is better equipped to handle diverse terrains, making them more versatile and capable of adjusting to different hunting scenarios.
• Injury Prevention: Dogs with poor conformation are more susceptible to injuries during hunting activities. For example, incorrect limb alignment can lead to joint problems or musculoskeletal issues, hindering the dog’s ability to perform optimally and reducing its overall hunting potential.
• Breed Standards: Many hunting dog breeds have specific conformation standards set by kennel clubs and breed organisations. These standards serve as a guide to ensure that the breed’s characteristics are preserved, including physical traits that contribute to their hunting capabilities.
In summary, the conformation of hunting dogs is crucial for their overall performance, endurance, agility, and hunting abilities. A well-structured dog is more likely to excel in the field, making conformation an essential consideration for breeders, hunters, and dog enthusiasts alike.

Weimaraners are independent thinkers.
Weimaraner owners know that their dogs are intelligent and challenging, but can be very rewarding.
Weimaraners are often considered to be problem solvers due to their intelligence, curiosity, and persistence. Here are a few reasons why they have this reputation:
• Intelligence: Weimaraners are generally intelligent dogs and have the capacity to learn and understand complex tasks and commands. They can quickly pick up on cues and instructions, making them responsive and adaptable.
• Curiosity: Weimaraners have a naturally inquisitive nature. They tend to explore their surroundings and investigate new things. This curiosity often leads them to seek out challenges and solutions to problems they encounter.
• Problem-solving skills: Weimaraners possess good problem-solving skills. When faced with obstacles or challenges, they can analyse the situation, assess different options, and come up with creative solutions. Their ability to think independently and find ways to overcome hurdles contributes to their reputation as problem solvers.
• Persistence: Weimaraners are known for their determination and persistence. When presented with a problem, they often display a tenacious attitude and will keep trying different approaches until they find a solution. This persistence is an essential trait for problem-solving tasks.

New Litter: Pheasantsfancy C Litter
We are delighted to introduce the Weimaraner Klub of Gauteng to the new litter of our kennel: Pheasant’s Fancy, Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA) registered.
This litter has been part of a project we have undertaken with the kennel: Walhalla and Dr Claudia Wigger-Pieper & Matthew Berry of ‘Boavida Gundogs and Wingshooting’, to initiate new significant lines of genetics into the South African ‘chapter’ of the Weimaraner Breed.
Faun (aka Ferro) vom Falknerforst (imp. Germany) VJP, HZP, VGP, (pedigree available on request) – Sire.
bred with
Pheasant’s Fancy Gerbera (aka Makeda) SA Champion (pedigree available on request) whose father was the highly decorated Edmund von Walhalla VDHCH, VDHJCH, FCI JHS, EJS. (pedigree available on request) – Dam
The litter of Nine Puppies has been an extraordinary and very rewarding experience and has been most notable in terms the results achieved and we anticipate a resurgence of interest in the breed. It has been a long road and we are extremely pleased with the results.
The litter has been specifically established around the idea of testing and proving the capabilities of the Weimaraner in the field (not only in terms of hunting but also a variety of other attributes that Weimaraners should have in terms of tracking, agility scenting and endurance). We have had great interest shown from the hunting fraternity, conservation profession as well as those who have an interest in the showing of dogs.
The litter will officially be registered as the ‘C’ (or third) ‘hunting’ litter bred by ‘Pheasant’s Fancy’. Makeda is the real, first name of the Queen of Sheba in Amharic. It is a matter of great pride that we have been able to progress along the road to breed Weimaraners for the purpose for which the breed originated, here in the Southern part of this great, beautiful, ancient, and at times, harsh continent of ours’, Africa.
